Gobos: Painting With Light

Gobos have been in used in the corporate event and entertainment industry for as long as I can remember. I can distinctly recall being a Relationship! Part of productions in church as a child where blue clouds, the sun and flashes of lightning were incorporated into various sets. I always thought it was so amazing that these patterns and effects could be produced with light and projected onto any surface.

Almost 20 years later, as a lighting designer at Sight and Sound Productions, I use gobos on a regular basis. Gobos we use can range from custom corporate logos to breakup patterns that can truly transform an entire room. I have always enjoyed using these tools of the trade because they allow me to be flexible with a design element and well… I can project the patterns anywhere my heart desires!

Some might wonder, “What exactly is a gobo?” A gobo is a circular steel, metal or glass device (with a cutout design) that is placed inside of a lighting instrument and recreates the design in light on a much larger scale. The design can be produced by simple white light or it Gearing could even be a full color HD picture.  Pretty cool huh?
